Department of Communications and the Arts - govCMS

Ministers Websites

Project Overview

OPC was delighted to be selected to redesign and redevelop the Department of Communications and the Arts (DoCA) Ministers’ website.

This prestigious project was won through the Department of Finance 'Drupal Services Panel' (DSP) and was successfully completed within a tight six week deadline.

The Ministers’ website was originally built utilising a proprietary content management system (CMS), and the Department was looking to migrate it over to govCMS in line with the DTA’s Digital Service Standard and at the same time make improvements to how social content was managed.

Why was OPC chosen?

OPC has specialised in building Drupal CMS websites since 2008 and in more recent times specifically utilising the govCMS distribution and hosting platform.

Having completed 7 govCMS builds in the first half of 2018, DoCA management had the confidence that OPC could deliver this project in the timeframe required.

Project goals, requirements and outcomes

This website redevelopment is unique in its ability to integrate social media content feeds (utilising the social content aggregation platform STACKLA) with traditional content like speeches and transcripts, whilst keeping within the govCMS SaaS framework. The feed area displays all allowed aggregated content and provides the user with the ability to filter based on content type. An approach previously not achieved within this platform.

Unlike raw social feeds which can be temporary and only last as long as the content exists on it’s source channel, the Drupal layer creates content types that are persistent which ensures all social content is captured at the time of archiving.

Functional enhancements related to how Minister-specific content (media releases, transcripts, social content etc) could be viewed, filtered, sorted, searched and shared.

The Department required that the newly developed site be flexible in its design and functionality to accommodate future changes to the Ministerial portfolio, due to any Machinery-of-Government changes. This included the ability to switch between one or multiple Ministers with the option of colour templates assigned to ministers, if and when required.

In completing this website OPC helped the govCMS team reach the milestone of 200 websites on the govCMS platform.

OPC’s experienced Drupal web development team, worked closely with the Department’s internal Creative Services team to meet, and often exceed, all requirements of the redevelopment project.
